RV Towing Terms & Definitions
- GVWR — Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
- The maximum a fully loaded vehicle or trailer is rated to weigh, set by its manufacturer.
- Dry weight
- What the unit weighs as it leaves the factory — before water, propane, gear or passengers.
- Payload capacity
- What you can add on top of the dry weight before you reach the GVWR.
- Tongue weight
- The downward force the trailer's coupler puts on the hitch ball — typically 10–15% of the loaded trailer weight.
- Maximum towing capacity
- The heaviest trailer your tow vehicle is rated to pull, as published by its manufacturer.
Always check the numbers on your own vehicle's door placard and owner's manual — ratings differ by trim, axle ratio and options.
